Eastertide is the festive seven-week season that celebrates the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. It begins at sundown the evening before Easter Sunday (the Easter Vigil). The date of Easter Sunday was set by the Council of Nicea in 325 AD to be the first Sunday after the first full moon following the Vernal Equinox. The season lasts for 50 days and terminates at sundown on the evening before Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost (Greek for "the 50th day") is celebrated as the day in which the Holy Spirit descended on the followers of Jesus after He had ascended into Heaven.

Eastertide (and every Sunday in the year) is a time to celebrate our Lord's Resurrection, therefore fasting and abstinence are dispensed for these occasions.
